Bushfire warning levels explained
- Advice
- A fire has started or smoke is affecting an area, but there is no immediate danger. Stay up to date and be ready to act if things change. Many Queensland Advice warnings are "Avoid smoke" messages.
- Watch and Act
- Conditions are changing and there is a heightened level of threat. Take action now to protect yourself and your family, which may include leaving.
- Emergency Warning
- The highest level. You may be in danger and need to take action immediately, as instructed in the warning.
- Fires without a warning
- Most listed fires carry no warning at all: they are vegetation fires that crews are attending, burning under control, or planned hazard reduction burns. They can still produce smoke.
These are the three levels of the Australian Warning System, used by every state and territory. Each warning's own advice is on the Queensland Fire Department website.
Fire danger ratings
Separate from warnings about fires that are already burning, the Australian Fire Danger Rating System forecasts how dangerous a fire would be if one started. The levels are Moderate, High, Extreme and Catastrophic. On Extreme and Catastrophic days, leaving early is the safest option for people in high-risk areas, and a fire ban may apply.
Hot, dry and windy weather drives the rating. Check your Queensland town forecast for temperature, wind and humidity, and the Queensland Fire Department for today's rating and any fire bans.
Bushfire smoke and your health
- When smoke is thick, stay indoors with windows and doors closed, and set air conditioners to recirculate.
- People with asthma or heart and lung conditions should keep their medication close and follow their action plan.
- Drive slowly with headlights on through smoke, and expect road closures near fires.
- For health advice call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84). In an emergency call 000.
Queensland's bushfire season
Queensland's main bushfire season runs through late winter and spring, when vegetation has dried out after winter and before the summer wet season arrives. Fires are most common from August to November in the south-east and inland, and earlier in the tropical north. Hazard reduction burns are also scheduled in the cooler months, so some listed fires are deliberate and controlled.
Watch the Queensland rain radar for storms that can bring both relief and dry lightning, and see the AFAC seasonal bushfire outlook for the season ahead.

Sources and how this page works
Warnings and fires come from the Queensland Fire Department current bushfire incidents feed on data.qld.gov.au, published under CC BY 4.0. Atmosphr checks it every 10 minutes and lists each item by level, title, area, status and time, with the nearest town that has an Atmosphr forecast. It does not reproduce warning advice: follow the link to read it. If the feed cannot be reached for 30 minutes, this page stops listing fires rather than show out-of-date ones.
