Rain outlook for Victorian towns and Melbourne catchments

Model rain totals for the past 24 hours and the next three days, wettest first. Heavy rain on already wet catchments is what turns a flood watch into a flood warning.

Model forecast Open-Meteo best match via Open-Meteo (Weather data by Open-Meteo, Open-Meteo API terms (CC BY 4.0)), retrieved and refreshed hourly. "Past 24 h" is the model's estimate, not a rain gauge reading. Model rain is a guide to the size of an event, not a flood forecast: official flood warnings come from the Bureau of Meteorology and VicSES.

Melbourne river catchments

Each catchment page lists the warnings for that river and its creeks, the rain outlook across the catchment, and how the river behaves in a flood.

Flood watch, flood warning and warning levels

Flood Watch
Issued for a catchment when forecast rain could cause flooding. It is an early heads-up: flooding has not started, and the watch is upgraded to a flood warning if it becomes likely.
Flood Warning (minor, moderate, major)
Issued when flooding is happening or expected at named places along a river. Minor flooding causes inconvenience such as closed low-lying roads; moderate flooding can affect homes and require evacuation; major flooding means extensive inundation of properties and towns.
Flash flooding
Fast flooding from intense rain over a short time, common in cities and small creeks. It can arrive with little notice and is covered by BOM severe thunderstorm and severe weather warnings rather than river flood warnings.
Advice, Watch and Act, Emergency Warning
The three levels of the Australian Warning System that VicEmergency uses. Advice means stay informed. Watch and Act means conditions are changing and you need to take action. Emergency Warning is the highest level: act immediately.

What to do in a flood

  • Follow the advice on the official VicEmergency warning for your area, and leave early if you are told to.
  • Never drive, ride or walk through floodwater. It is often deeper and faster than it looks and can hide washed-out roads.
  • Keep children and pets away from drains, creeks and stormwater channels.
  • For flood or storm help call the VicSES on 132 500. In a life-threatening emergency call 000.
  • Prepare with the VicSES flood guides, and check BOM river heights for gauges near you.

Sources and how this page works

Warnings and incidents come from the VicEmergency public data feed, © State of Victoria, Australia, used under the EMV emergency data notice (CC BY 3.0 AU). Atmosphr checks it every 10 minutes, shows the time of the last update received, and lists each item by name, area and time only. It does not reproduce warning advice: follow the link to read it. If the feed cannot be reached for 30 minutes, this page stops listing warnings rather than show out-of-date ones.

Bureau of Meteorology warnings that appear in the feed are shown by title with a link to the Bureau. Rain figures are model forecasts, not official forecasts or gauge readings. See Victorian warning and emergency links for every official channel.
